Adoption, Up Country Style!

February 20, 2011

East Providence, RI - In 2009, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Up Country proposed a plan offering a free collar and lead to each and every dog adopted from their neighbor, the RISPCA. This was the brainchild of owner Alice Nichols, who couldn't help but notice shelter dogs being walked by the Up Country factory. “When we moved into this new location, we saw dogs being walked everyday up and down our street. Volunteers come and walk all the dogs daily, so we have a constant stream going by.” When new pet parents pick up their adoption papers, they receive a certificate for an Up Country collar and lead of their choice. Many times, they stop by on their way home with their new best friend. “We love seeing the dogs come through our doors!” said Design Director Donna Bodell. “Even though they have just left the shelter and their relationship is just hours old, you can already sense an incredible bond.”

The new family gets to choose their favorite design from the Up Country catalog, which has over 100 designs, so sometimes it can take a while. Once the collar is fitted and tried on, it's time for a photo. These are posted on Up Country's Facebook and Twitter accounts to help spread the good word about adoption. After donating hundreds of collar and lead sets over the last four years, the staff at Up Country has heard almost every story you could imagine. Heart wrenching, inspirational, funny and joyful; sometime all at the same time!
